Understanding how cold and hot water mixer taps work helps sanitary ware buyers evaluate whether the product structure is properly designed, whether key components meet quality requirements, and whether the manufacturing processes are up to standard.

Common types of hot and cold water mixer taps include basin faucets, kitchen faucets, bathtub faucets, and shower faucets. Although they differ in appearance and functionality, their basic working principles are similar: cold and hot water enter through separate inlet pipes, while the handle operates the cartridge to control water flow and the mixing ratio. The mixed water then flows through the aerator or outlet before being discharged.

1. Working Principle of Cold & Hot Water Mixer Taps

1.1 How Do Cold and Hot Water Enter the Faucet?

Generally, cold and hot water are supplied to the faucet through two separate flexible inlet hoses connected to angle valves or concealed water supply pipes inside the wall.

The main components include:

  • Cartridge: Controls the on/off function and the mixing ratio of hot and cold water.
  • Water outlet passage: Directs the mixed water through the faucet body to the spout.

Under standard installation conditions, the hot water inlet is usually connected to the left side at the bottom of the faucet, while the cold water inlet is connected to the right side. However, the actual connection should always follow the product design and local installation requirements.

1.2 How Does the Cartridge Mix Hot and Cold Water?

Taking a common ceramic cartridge as an example, the mixing process works as follows:

  1. Cold and hot water enter the corresponding inlets of the cartridge separately.
  2. When the handle is moved, it changes the opening positions of the ceramic discs inside the cartridge.
  3. Hot and cold water flow into the mixing chamber according to the opening positions. Moving the handle to the left generally increases the proportion of hot water, while moving it to the right increases the proportion of cold water.
  4. The mixed water flows through the cartridge outlet, then passes through the faucet body and spout before reaching the water outlet.

Important Note: The mixing ratio of hot and cold water is not determined solely by the opening area inside the cartridge. For example, if the hot water flow rate is insufficient, the outlet temperature may remain relatively low even when the handle is turned towards the hot water position.

2. Key Quality Inspection Points for Cold & Hot Water Mixer Taps

Quality inspection of cold and hot water mixer taps generally focuses on five key areas: sealing performance, functionality, threads and dimensions, surface finish, and packaging.

Point 1: Sealing Performance

Conduct water testing to check whether there is any leakage around the cartridge, faucet body, inlet hoses, and connection points.

Point 2: Functionality

Check whether the handle operates smoothly when opening, closing, and adjusting the water flow and temperature.

For faucets with swivel spouts, check whether the spout rotates smoothly without sticking or excessive looseness.

Point 3: Thread Quality

Check whether all threads are within the specified tolerances and whether they can connect properly with the corresponding fittings and accessories.

Point 4: Faucet Surface Quality

The surface finish should have a consistent color and appearance, without scratches, bubbles, yellowing, coating peeling, or other visible defects.

Point 5: Packaging

Check whether all installation accessories, such as flexible hoses and fixing nuts, are included. The packaging should also provide sufficient protection during transportation.

3. Detailed Quality Inspection Items, Methods & Acceptance Criteria

Inspection Item

Inspection Method

Common Defects

Faucet sealing performance

Conduct a water pressure test at the specified pressure and check the faucet body and joints.

Water seepage, leakage, cracks

Cartridge sealing performance

Conduct a water pressure test when the cartridge is in the closed position.

Incomplete shut-off, dripping, internal water leakage

Aerator performance

Conduct a water flow test.

Split or uneven water streams, misaligned flow

Spout operation

For kitchen faucets, rotate the spout repeatedly to check its movement.

Sticking, excessive resistance, excessive looseness

Handle operation

Open and close the handle repeatedly and adjust its angle to check operating smoothness.

Sticking, excessive tightness, excessive looseness, abnormal noise

Flow rate testing

Measure the water flow rate under the specified pressure.

Flow rate too low or too high

Faucet body dimensions

Use calipers, thread gauges, and other measuring tools.

Incorrect installation dimensions, mismatched threads

Surface quality

Conduct a visual inspection under the specified lighting conditions.

Scratches, bubbles, color differences, coating peeling

Accessories

Check against the BOM and packing list.

Missing accessories, installation instructions, or other components

Packaging and labeling

Verify the model number, labels, instructions, and packaging requirements.

Incorrect model numbers, missing labels, insufficient protection during transportation

4. Five Important Factors to Consider When Purchasing Cold & Hot Water Mixer Taps

Before placing an order, importers and wholesale buyers should pay particular attention to the following five aspects:

1. Is Every Faucet Subjected to a Water Pressure Test?

Confirm whether the manufacturer conducts 100% testing or sampling inspections. The specified test pressure and inspection records should also be clearly defined.

2. What Are the Brand and Model of the Cartridge?

Check the cartridge brand and model. Standard-sized cartridges are generally recommended because they are easier to replace and maintain in the future.

3. Are the Threads and Critical Dimensions Within the Required Tolerances?

Incorrect thread specifications or installation dimensions may cause compatibility problems during installation. Make sure all critical dimensions meet the agreed technical requirements.

4. Are There Clearly Defined Quality Standards for Surface Finishes?

Confirm whether the manufacturer has established clear quality standards for surface finishes. Check whether inspection records are available for color consistency, coating thickness, and corrosion resistance.

5. Are All Installation Accessories and Instructions Included?

Make sure the required installation accessories and user instructions are complete. The packaging should be intact, and all product labels should contain accurate information.
